Roles and Responsibilities for Transit Board Members

A board of directors can be a transit agency's greatest asset or on occasion, a liability. You want more than a warm body taking up a seat at a monthly meeting. To be successful, transit systems want and need committed board members who understand their role, have a desire to make a difference, and are willing to "learn the ropes" of transit operations. Clearly outlining the roles and responsibilities of board members and selecting the appropriate mix of talents are two of the ways effective boards can be established. This workshop, which is geared toward board members and transit management participants, highlights 10 key responsibilities of effective board members and focuses on some common problems and issues that non-profit boards must overcome. Spending time on board development can have a tremendous pay-off for a transit system. Building a knowledgeable, cooperative team can take a transit agency to a new level of successful operations.
