Realized Travel Demand of Rural and Small Urban Elderly Women in North Dakota

Scholarly work recognizes there is a growing need to care for the aging population of the United States. However, it is not certain what factors influence realized travel demand among the elderly in rural and small urban locations in North Dakota. This study will address:

  1. How does realized travel demand differ between rural and small urban women over age 65 who continue to drive as well as those who no longer drive?
  2. What factors (individual, social environment, and physical environment) most affect realized travel demand for rural and small urban women over 65 who continue to drive as well as no longer drive?

SURTC to Look at Travel Potential of Elderly in Rural Areas

"As population across rural regions of the United States consolidates around trade centers, the proportion of elderly remaining in small towns and rural areas continues to grow. Their growing proportion and increasing average age is bound to have an influence on their mobility, and a new SURTC study should help researchers and policy makers assess the situation."
